Is Death Equal to Freedom?
If Kate Chopin’s character, Edna Pontellier lived in the 21st century as opposed to the nineteenth century, would she have realizen her cause life? Society’s views during the 19th century did non accept women to behave handle Edna, whereas in the 21st century if a adult female is not happy, she can simply file for divorce or pass away her husband without it ruining her reputation or determinationing her life. Since Kate Chopin wrote The awakening during the 19th century, she had no other option but to end Edna’s life, instead of Edna being ostracized by the Creole friendship, similar some of the other characters in her novel.
In Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, Edna battles against society’s views of how a woman should act and tries to find her own personal fulfillment and embrace her new found freedom. creation that the novel was written in the late 19th century, Kate Chopin had no other choice but to have Edna kill herself at the end to avoid her having to live as an outcast. A woman in the late 1890’s was expected to be a “mother-woman”; one whose only purpose in life is to take treat of her husband and his needs, care for the home, and most importantly care for her children.



Madame Ratignolle (Adele) is the perfect example of the “mother-woman”, which Edna was expected to mimic. Edna Pontellier is in fact not a mother-woman, nor has any desire to become one. “In short, Mrs. Pontellier was not a mother-woman. It was easy to know them, fluttering about with extended, protect wings when any harm, real or imaginary, threatened their unparalleled brood. They were women who idolized their children, worshiped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to rub out themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels” (16).
