I. Introduction:
Rabies is a contagious viral disease that causes acute encephalitis in warm-blooded mammals. This disease is zoonotic, or transmitted via faunas, and causes firing of the brain. This inflammation of the brain leads to very interesting symptoms. These symptoms have matter to humans through and throughout the years. Although insaneness is normally transmitted from animal to animal, it can be passed to humans through the saliva from a bite of an infected animal. In humans, rabidity is almost forever fatal if post exposure prophylaxis is not administered prior to the infringement of the more severe symptoms. The rage virus infects the central queasy system, which the symptoms from this virus spread to the brain, and without the proper vaccines and medicines leads to death.

II. Historical/Cultural Significance:
The word rabies has its origins in ancient Sanskrit (3000 BC), rabhas, which means, to do force-out (Health, 2011). The term rabies is also derived from the Latin word for madness.



The genus for rabies is lyssavirus. The Greeks derived the word lyssa from lud or idle (Health, 2011). So, as it is shown, rabies has obviously been around for thousands of years and the ancient people knew some the disease. Interestingly enough, it has also been thought that the origin of the vampire and loup-garou legends in Europe stem from the early human rabies cases in the early 18th century (Health, 2011). This fascination with the violent symptoms has made its way into the mainstream media.
